[Ohio House of Representatives Letterhead]

July 23, 1997

The Honorable Randy Gardner, Acting Chairman
House Education Committee
77 South High Street
Columbus, OH 43266

Dear Mr. Chairman,

During yesterday's Committee meeting you announced that the members of the committee would determine the timing of the vote on it SB 55. With respect, it is our request that any further consideration of amendments or of the bill itself be delayed until next week, in hope of having it ready for the next regularly scheduled meeting of the House Education Committee.

The purpose of this request is to afford an opportunity for the undersigned committee members to present to the full committee a bi-partisan substitute SB 55, which more fully addresses the issues of accountability to the taxpayers and educational opportunity for the children of Ohio. We have an historic opportunity to shape education policy in a way that will not only meet the requirements of the DeRolph decision, but will also provide every Ohio child with an educational opportunity of which we can be proud.

We recognize and appreciate the work that Senator Watts, you and others have invested in the proposal before us. However, we believe that the proposal can be strengthened substantially for the benefit of all the children of Ohio. We look forward to presenting our plan next week.

Sincerely,

[Signed by: State Representatives Mike Wise, Mike Fox, Jamie Callender, Jim Jordan, C.J. Prentiss, John Bender, Peter Lawson, Bill Ogg, Joe Sulzer, and Charleta Tavares.
