Gubernatorial candidates differ on State Board

Gongwers News Service reports that Lee Fisher, Democratic candidate for governor, and Bob Taft, the Republican candidate, differ in their views on the ideal composition of the State Board of Education. Fisher supports a return to an all-elected membership, while Taft said that he favors retaining the governor's power to appoint board members. Fisher said, "The State Board of Education is one of the state's most important boards in terms of its impact on our children. It is critical that this board serve the best interests of our children -- not the best interests of the governor who appoints its members." Taft said the current law, " . . . is a good combination. It's one we're just starting to work with and I think it's not a good time to pull the plant up by the roots and try to go in some different direction."
