School board cans roll-call votes - Columbus Dispatch (10-11-95)

The newly expanded State Board of Education yesterday voted eliminate roll-call votes in favor of voice tallies.

Board member Vincent D. Pettinellii of Dublin proposed the resolution, saying roll calls were unnecessary and cumbersome for the 19-member board, which meets for 2 1/2 days each month. .

Opponents argued that roll-call votes provide a record that allows the public to evaluate the performance of members.

The board approved the measure 13 to 4 with two members absent. Marie S. Pfeiffer, an elected member from Columbus, was among those opposing the measure.

Pettinelli's proposal was amended so that a roll call will be required if three or more members request it.
